About three weeks ago, still \u26a1 HIGH <\/strong>\u26a1 on my positive experience with two Catalan language exchanges on Skype\/Zoom I had had with people I follow on Twitter<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span> during the #40h7dLC<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, I decided I wanted MORE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Still high<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

And wanting more<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

Language addiction it is. But one that\u2019s healthy for the brain \ud83e\udde0 (or so I\u2019d like to think); way healthier than my coffee \u2615 (perks of being married to an \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9) and chocolate \ud83c\udf6b (perks of being \ud83c\udde7\ud83c\uddea) addiction.<\/p>\n

And so I downloaded Tandem and this is what has happened:<\/p>\n

1\ufe0f\u20e3<\/strong> Some 50 people have sent me messages, which is more than I could handle to be honest. I\u2019m trying to be a nice gay\u2026 erm\u2026 guy and respond to everyone who sends me a message. As a result, I haven’t yet reached out to anyone myself.<\/p>\n

2\ufe0f\u20e3 I\u2019m very popular in \ud83c\udde7\ud83c\uddf7: 90% (\u203c\ufe0f) were gay guys \ud83c\udff3\ufe0f\u200d\ud83c\udf08 from the country of Samba (de Janeiro).<\/p>\n

3\ufe0f\u20e3 Many guys have half nude pictures on their profile, and some have only those. Wrong app I\u2019d say. I have photos of my \ud83d\udc3e dogs \ud83d\udc3e and me.<\/p>\n

4\ufe0f\u20e3 Probably related to the aforementioned: I got a request to exchange pictures I wouldn\u2019t send to my mother and one guy told me what activities he would like to perform with me \ud83d\ude33 (again nothing I\u2019d share with my mother).<\/p>\n

5\ufe0f\u20e3 Most of my conversations (I\u2019d say 90%) where in English. I don\u2019t mind speaking \ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7 and helping\/correcting others, but the return on time investment was rather low.<\/p>\n

6\ufe0f\u20e3 Many conversations weren\u2019t leading anywhere (lack of interest, not much in common, extreme slow response) or simply died down \ud83e\udddf after a few messages. Though one conversation with a \ud83c\udde7\ud83c\uddf7 bloke went well enough to exchange \u260e\ufe0f numbers and a \ud83c\uddff\ud83c\udde6 guy does seem to be turning into a stable conversation partner.<\/p>\n

7\ufe0f\u20e3 But I was aiming for video calls and finally a few days ago Zoomed up with a \ud83c\uddea\ud83c\uddf8 lady living in \ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea to have a Dutch-Catalan exchange and we\u2019ve planned another exchange for next weekend. So that\u2019s a success \ud83d\ude4c story.<\/p>\n

My conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n

I still have some conversations going (or dragging on depending on my conversation partner), but without the only real exchange I have had it would have been a bit disappointing as result. I did spend a lot of time on the app and tried to respond asap \ud83d\ude80 but not many people seem to want to be on the app for longer language exchanges. Maybe my expectations were to high or I am reaching a conclusion too fast. For now the app remains on my phone but I might spend less time on it and respond not as quick as I used to do.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/p><\/div>
