Hot summers. Freaking cold nights (in our tent) and Lego(land) of course (I was a tween at the time). My native Dutch \ud83c\udde7\ud83c\uddea, proficient English \ud83c\uddec\ud83c\udde7 and especially my intermediate German \ud83c\udde9\ud83c\uddea gave me a head start with sentence structure and vocabulary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">But don&#8217;t get me started on my struggles (definitely more than one and yes I am going to start now) with their numerals: 10, 20, 30 and 40 are still doable; though 30 was one of my struggles<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ti <\/span><\/strong>(10),<\/span> <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tyve <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">(20)<\/span>, <strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tredive <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">(30),\u00a0<\/span><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">fyrre <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">(40)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">But when I got to 50, I started scratching my head. Multiple times. <\/span>\ud83e\udd2f<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">Well, that&#8217;s exactly what the Danes do when counting from 50 up until the same 99, but with the added particularity (aka difficulty) that somewhere down the road they decided to leave out a part of the original pronunciation. Confusing? Yes! Me struggling? Add <\/span><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00e6<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">and <\/span><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00e5<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\"> and you have the three extra letters of the Danish (and Norwegian) alphabet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/span><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00f8<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\"> as in <em><strong>bj\u00f8rn <\/strong><\/em>(bear), <em><strong>\u00f8l <\/strong><\/em>(beer), <em><strong>\u00f8je <\/strong><\/em>(eye)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/span><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00e6<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\"> as in <em><strong>m\u00e6lk <\/strong><\/em>(milk), <em><strong>g\u00e6st <\/strong><\/em>(guest), <em><strong>\u00e6ble <\/strong><\/em>(apple)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/span><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00e5<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\"> as in <em><strong>\u00e5r <\/strong><\/em>(year), <em><strong>h\u00e5nd <\/strong><\/em>(hand), <em><strong>ogs\u00e5 <\/strong><\/em>(also)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">What&#8217;s more, the language is known, just as English, for its strange relation between pronunciation and spelling: <em><strong>ka<\/strong><\/em><\/span><em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">g<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\"><em><strong>e <\/strong><\/em>(cake), <\/span><em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">h<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\"><em><strong>jem <\/strong><\/em>(home), <em><strong>at begyn<\/strong><\/em><\/span><em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">d<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\"><em><strong>e<\/strong><\/em> (to begin), <em><strong>s\u00f8l<\/strong><\/em><\/span><em><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">v<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\"> (silver). The red letters are <em><strong>stumme bogstaver<\/strong><\/em> and these silent letters are omnipresent, or so it seems for a beginner when you more often than not have to ignore the d, h, v or g when you encounter them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">To make things worse (or more interesting), some words are pronounced with a <em><strong>st\u00f8d<\/strong><\/em>, a phenomenon specific to this language and reminiscent of the English glottal stop (think of the way \ud83e\uddc8 butter and \ud83c\udf0a water are pronounced in Cockney English: bu&#8217;er and wa&#8217;er, where the &#8216; indicates a sudden short break). There are words where the absence or presence of it determines the meaning. In the following words the d is silent, but the words end with the <em>st\u00f8d<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">Let&#8217;s end with something soft: the <strong><em>bl\u00f8dt <\/em><\/strong>(soft) d, whose pronunciation resembles an English dark l (the l you find in circle and tall). I&#8217;ve always thought them to be a bit on the pricey side, but they have joined the internet\/app language learning (r)evolution and most of their courses are now indeed as app available and at a more affordable price. In short, their courses offer a daily lesson with audio, translation, some exercises and a limited amount of grammar. Assimilation through repetition is their key to success. They must have known I started with this language as shortly after I started my Danish marathon (language learning is never a sprint (un)fortunately) they launched a new product for beginners: <em>Apprendre le danois.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"color: #111111;\">I am a grammar addict, so after some research I decided to buy the <em>Danish Tutor<\/em> (published by <em>Teach Yourself<\/em>).
